       Interdyscyplinarny zespół badawczy BIOGEO zajmuje się procesami przyrodniczymi rozgrywającymi się na styku biosfery i geosfery. Szczególną uwagę zespół poświęca kopalnym i współczesnym środowiskom morskim mającym charakter wieloskalowy. Procesy te analizowane są w różnych skalach czasowo-przestrzennych i uwzględniają szeroki zakres zjawisk obejmujący te zachodzące w skali milisekund do skali dziesiątek, a nawet setek milionów lat oraz zjawiska obserwowane w przestrzeni od skali molekularnej do skali globalnej. To wieloskalowe podejście do przedmiotu badań jest dla zespołu kluczem do rekonstrukcji przeszłości i przewidywania przyszłych zmian w ekosystemach ziemskich. Badania oparte są na nowych i klasycznych metodach stosowanych in fossilio, in vivo oraz in silico. Mikroskamieniałości organizmów jednokomórkowych (bruzdnice i otwornice) są stosowane jako narzędzia do rekonstrukcji paleośrodowiskowych. Część badań oparta jest na aktualiźmie wykorzystywanym do poznania mechanizmów morfogenetycznych i biomineralizacyjnych u otwornic. Aparatura badawcza jest przeznaczona do hodowli, obserwacji i prowadzenia eksperymentów na żywych otwornicach. Badania in silico oparte są na modelowaniu systemu ziemskiego (geosystemu) stosowanego do symulacji procesów paleoklimatycznych i paleoceanograficznych. Zespół prowadzi również współpracę z informatykami w celu wdrożenia modeli morfogenetycznych i środowiskowych, które będę służyć do testowania wyników badań empirycznych.
