Factors controlling morphogenesis and biomineralization of foraminiferal shells

 

This project is focused on subcellular structures controlling morphogenesis and biomineralization of foraminiferal tests (shells). Observations and interpretations are based on live experiments on calcifying foraminiferal shells. Our latest results show that pseudopodial structures are respectively responsible for globular chamber shape and direct cellular control on biomineralization. These novel results contradict the extracellular mineralization paradigm that was proposed to explain an exceptional biomineralization pattern in calcareous foraminifera.
