Research Centre in Wrocław  carries basic research aimed at the reconstruction of geodynamic history of Variscan orogen and the evolution of Palaeozoic basins in the Sudetes within the framework of  central European Variscides. Main fields of activity include igneous and metamorphic petrology, structural geology and regional tectonics, isotopic geochronology and sedimentology.
The Research Centre has contributed to the recognition of early Variscan tectonometamorphic history of the Góry Sowie Block and isotopic datings of its stages, to the discovery of high pressure rocks in the Fore-Sudetic Block and establishing their P-T-d paths, to the recognition and dating of polyphase magmatic, deformational and metamorphic events in the Neoproterozoic-Palaeozoic Izera complex and to the recognition of large-scale allochtonism and depositional architecture of Lower Carboniferous sequence in the Góry Bardzkie.
Recent investigations are concentrated in the northern part of the Karkonosze-Izera Block, in the Orlica-Śnieżnik Dome, and in the eastern part of the Fore-Sudetic Block.
Research Centre in Wrocław, besides bi-lateral co-operations, also participates in large international projects – recently in EUROPROBE and OROGENIC PROCESSES.

Currently, three NCN OPUS grants are conducting in the Research Centre (principal investigators: A. Żelaźniewicz, M. Jastrzębski, J. Ciążela).
