Maciej T. Krajcarz (PhD University of Warsaw, Poland; habilitation Institute of Geological Sciences Polish Academy of Sciences) is a Quaternary geologist. His primary focus is clastic cave sediments: the deposition environment and post-depositional disturbances. He took part in excavations and studied cave sediments in Poland, Russia and Kyrgyzstan, and applied micromorphology and geochemistry, including stable isotopes. His current project is focused on important paleoanthropological caves in Alay Mts. of Kyrgyzstan (notably, Sel’ungur Cave) and Altai in southern Siberia (Chagyrskaya and Strashnaya Caves). His another research focus is Pleistocene and Holocene fauna found in caves and the use of this fossil record to reconstruct the deposition environment. In cooperation with colleagues from the Inst. of Archaeology (Toruń, Poland) and Biogeology (Tubingen, Germany) he applies stable isotope analysis to infer paleoclimatic and paleoecological information from bones and teeth.

Research interest

  • geology of cave sediments
  • geology and geochemistry of fossil bones, stable isotopes in fossil bones and teeth
  • taphonomy of Quaternary bone assemblages, especially geochemical homogeneity of assemblages
  • geoarchaeology

Project objectives and research hypothesis

Caves serve as a research field for different disciplines of science. Clastic sediments which fill the caves and rockshelters are in the focus of interest of geology, paleogeography, paleobiology, archaeology and anthropology. This is because caves are sediment traps – the depressed landforms which collect sediments continuously for millennia. Significance of caves becomes even greater if we concluded that the types of terrestrial sediment traps are highly limited. The second reason for the scientific value of the caves is that karst cavities were often inhabited by animals and humans. Therefore cave sediments may record the history of past ecosystems and ancient humans, but also the history of terrestrial environmental changes.
The main objective of this project is to establish the stratigraphy of Quaternary clastic sediments of the selected caves in Central Asia, and to recognize the site formation processes that formed and/or disturbed the sedimentary fills of these caves. A complex geological approach proposed here allows to recognize sedimentological, geochemical and chronological aspects of the depositional and diagenetic processes. The special attention is given in the project to the colluvial facies – their position in sequences, lateral spread and impact on the integrity of strata (and further, the integrity of archaeological, anthropological and paleontological assemblages). The important task is to formulate the lithostratigraphic schemes for studied caves, which can be used for future correlations and may serve as a reference during further excavations. The selected caves are important archaeological and palaeoanthropological sites, what makes the project results useful for a wide range of disciplines.
Project postulates the following research questions to be explained:

  • What was the main depositional agent in each stratum? In particular, how did the participation of the main depositional agents (aeolian, fluvial, colluvial, rockfall) changed during Pleistocene and Holocene?
  • How abundant were colluvial events and/or other re-depositional processes, and how homogenous are particular strata, including their archaeological/paleontological assemblages?
  • What is the correlative value of some characteristic facies of cave sediments known from Central Asian caves? In particular:
    • are the colluvial series in different caves connected to the same series of paleoclimatic events?
    • are massive rockfall horizons in different caves connected to the same seismic event?
  • Where inside the sequences are cold and warm climatic episodes recorded? In particular, what is the distribution of the indices of chemical (warm) and physical (cold) weathering along the sedimentary profiles?
  • What is the geological age of sedimentary fills of the studied caves? Where in the sedimentary sequences are the boundaries between stratigraphic units (such as Middle Pleistocene, Upper Pleistocene, Holocene and units of lower rank) recorded?

Work plan

Project is based on the sedimentological analyses of cave sediments from selected caves in Central Asia (karst regions of Altai, Tian Shan and Pamiro-Alai piedmonts). The selected caves are important archaeological sites of Paleolithic and also paleoanthropological sites, were human remains are preserved. Five sites are currently under excavation and the P.I. has been granted access to the material: Chagyrskaya, Strashnaya (both in Russian Altai), Sel’Ungur, Obishir-1 and Obishir-5 (all in Ferghana Valley, Kyrgyzstan). Two more additional sites are planned to be included (Obi-Rakhmat in Uzbekistan and Okladnikova in Altai) – these sites have been excavated decades ago and there is no access to sediments, but the fossil bones are still available in collections.
Chagyrskaya, Sel’Ungur and Obishir have already been visited by P.I. of this project in 2016-2017, and initial studies were started. At all these sites the thick sequences of stratified Quaternary sediments are preserved, including Upper Pleistocene and Holocene. Most probably Middle Pleistocene series is also preserved in Sel’Ungur.

Location of cave sites included in the project

Project assumes the recognition of the following detail objectives:

  1. Site formation processes at the studied cave sites – recognition of the sedimentary and post-sedimentary processes for particular strata (time scale), parts of the caves (spatial geomorphic aspect) and different caves (regional aspect), with special attention to the role of anthropo-, bio- and geogenic factors.
  2. Stratigraphy of the studied cave sites – preparation of climato-, litho- and chronostratigraphic schemes for cave sediment profiles, where possible supported by chronometric dating and literature data on biostratrigraphy or paleoecology.
  3. Local/regional scale geological events – searching for sedimentary phenomena of large spatial distribution, that may record the events of regional range.
  4. Usefulness of cave sediments for direct dating – recognizing the main process of quartz or feldspar grains accumulation, providing the reliability of OSL dating of sediment, as well as measurement of the uranium concentration in sediments for evaluation of the reliability of U-series (U/Th) dating.
  5. Assemblage integrity – evaluation of the preservation state of the primary architecture of strata, with important attribution of sedimentological conclusions on secondary disturbances of the sediments.

State of preliminary research
The stratigraphic model for Chagyrskaya was proposed by Derevianko et al. (2013). However, geoarchaeological analyses performed during re-excavation in 2017 with participation of P.I. revealed that the scheme needs reformulating. Especially the part of the sequence described previously as layers 6a-6b is much more complex and include colluvial strata, what has importance for archaeological and anthropological research.
The preliminary geological investigation of Sel’Ungur sediments were conducted by the P.I. in 2016 (Krivoshapkin et al. 2016). The analysis of chemical similarity of fossil bones, performed preliminary for several animal bone samples, revealed high content of trace elements, what offers the perspectives for geochemical fossil provenance analysis (Trueman et al. 2006). Enormously high concentration of As and Se indicate intensive permineralization. Increased content of these elements was also detected in some recent bones collected outside the cave. This suggests that the increase in As/Se could be life-related, not an effect of fossilization. This needs further study, as the hypothesis of in vivo enrichment may be of high importance for the reconstruction of the living space of past animals around Sel’Ungur cave.
In case of Obishir-5, the initial model of stratigraphy and site formation processes was proposed by the P.I. (details in Shnaider et al. 2017). These preliminary investigations revealed the colluvial origin of the most of sediments, what makes further detail sedimentological studies necessary to understand the deposition and homogeneity of the entire series.
Some geographical aspects of sedimentary sequences of the selected cave sites were already studied, especially the paleoenvironment (Derevianko et al. 2003). This creates the basic data source on the sites and sets a starting point for directions of further investigations. The well-recognized aspects include the classical paleontology of vertebrates, performed for Chagyrskaya, Strashnaya and Okladnikova (e.g., Markova 1992, Vasiliev 2013, Serdyuk & Zenin 2016). Bone materials from other sites are currently investigated. Due to those studies, the bone material available for this project contains already the taxonomically identified bones. Another well-recognized aspect is palynology, studied for Chagyrskaya and Strashnaya caves (Rudaya et al. 2017). These studies provide the solid base of paleoenvironmental data, however without sedimentological context.
Risks analysis
The main difficulties are related to the research area and include organization of field works in foreign countries and unstable geopolitical situation. The undertaken counteractions are strict co-operation with Russian, Kyrgyz and Uzbek archaeologists (IGS PAS has a signed agreement with Russian Academy of Sciences on the geoarchaeological cooperation in caves of Central Asia), and selection of sites in different countries and regions – Russian Altai, Kyrgyz Pamiro-Alai, Uzbek Tian Shan.
Project’s deliverables:
- the project results will be published in high ranked scientific journals, including Open Access publications;
- the most important or interesting results will be presented on international conferences and symposiums;
- project website and regular seminars on geoarchaeology of Central Asian caves will be organized – to present the current achievements of the project.

Scientific methodology

The main methods in the project are sedimentological analyses, supported by further geological methods (geochemistry, chronometric dating):

  • sedimentological analyses. These will consist a set of analyses focused on the reconstruction of sedimentary and post-sedimentary processes (type of deposition factors, direction of geological transport, provenance of material). These analyses will also be used in evaluation of the usefulness of clastic material for OSL dating, (i.e., checking if the material was re-deposited and mixed). The analytical methods include:
    • micromorphological analysis of the thin section of undisturbed monoliths. This microscopic method allows to recognize the deposition factors and microscale sedimentary features (Stoops et al. 2003). The use of polarized light enable to detect differences in fine matrix, and recognize the admixtures of other sediment. Extensive analysis covering the whole sedimentary profile enable to indicate the strata being the sources of re-deposited material. This method has been developed in last years for cave sediments and offers wide research perspectives (e.g., Goldberg et al. 2007, Miller 2015).
    • grain size distribution. These includes granulometry of both coarse fractions (>2 mm, mostly limestone debris, analyzed in field by sieving), and fines (analyzed by laser diffraction on samples, outsourced to external laboratory, results interpreted by investigators). This method allows to connect the layers with periods of intensive frost weathering (Madeyska 1981) and to link the strata with sedimentary processes (Mycielska-Dowgiałło & Ludwikowska-Kędzia 2011).
    • quartz grains morphology. Analysis of coarse fractions (methodology adopted from Krajcarz & Madeyska 2010, Turk & Turk 2010) allows to reconstruct main types and intensity of weathering conditions. Analysis of sand-sized quartz grains enable the reconstructions of sedimentary process, but also impact of periglacial conditions (Woronko & Pisarska-Jamroży 2016).
  • chronometric dating of sediments. So called ‘absolute’ dating is necessary to anchor the stratigraphic scheme in the timescale, but also for reliable inter-site correlation. The widely used radiocarbon method has limited importance here due to weak preservation state of organic remains (confirmed low content of collagen in fossil bones), but also because the expected chronology stays out of radiocarbon scale. It may be used for Holocene sediments and Strashnaya (relatively cold climate). However, the most important dating method will be:
    • U-series (U/Th) dating of tooth enamel (abundant material at all sites) and speleothems (occurring in Sel’Ungur). The applicant unit, IGS PAS, has an experienced staff and laboratory facility for U/Th dating;
    • OSL dating of aeolian sediments (loess is the most common sediment at all studied sites). The OSL dating will be subcontracted to external laboratory, and results interpreted by project’s investigators.
  • geochemical analyses of sediments will allow to recognize horizons of depletion and enrichment in particular compounds, related to climate-controlled weathering and pedogenic processes (Madeyska 1981, Krajcarz et al. 2015b):
    • content of trace elements (ICP-MS analysis, outsourced to external laboratory, results interpreted by investigators), e.g., to calculate weathering indexes such as based on Al/Ti, K/Na, Sr/Ba ratios and others;
    • content of carbonates and organic matter in sediments (CHNS elemental analysis with HCl-decalcification).
  • geochemical analyses of fossil bones – this method allows to determine the homogeneity of bone assemblages in particular layers, based on assumption that trace element composition is related to lithology of sediment (Krajcarz 2017):
    • content of trace elements (ICP-MS – as in case of sediments) – for geochemical provenance analysis;
    • FTIR spectroscopy – to determine structural position of the ions of external origin, such as arsenate, what will allow to conclude on pre- or post-mortem enrichment, and to evaluate the linkage between fossil bones geochemistry and fossilization processes.

Field works, including sampling at the sites and some preliminary analyses, will be conducted during trips to Russian Altai, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
Additional analyses in the project is archive query. This includes sedimentological analysis of archaeological documentation for studied sites, library survey and works in institutions storing the collections (Novosibirsk, Tashkent, Bishkek – material selection, sampling). This stage needs close cooperation between geologists (P.I. and PhD student) and archaeologists experienced in excavation work in Central Asian sites (Co-investigator Archaeo-Altai, Co-investigator Archaeo-Ferghana). When possible, the trips will be jointed with field trips to reduce the travel costs.
Data processing – statistical analysis will be applied to numerical data, such as results of grain size or chemical analysis. Multi-variate analysis (PCA and cluster analysis) will be the most important methods to evaluate the variability and to detect trends. The centered log-ratio transformation (CLR) or similar ones (e.g., IRL) will be used to de-constrain the large datasets. Final stage will be integration of the results of different methods into lithostratigraphical schemes and building the deposition models for each site. An attempt of stratigraphic correlation between sites, but also correlation with other regional scales (e.g., loess-paleosol sequences), will be undertaken.
