SUMMARY

Domain of Science: original and for the first time published achievements (sole or the main co-author):
1. First palaeomagnetic dating of folds developed in the Devonian strata of the Holy Cross Mts, proving their Varscan age (Lewandowski, 1981). Later studies conformed this result.
2. Original hypothesis, based on the own palaeomagnetic data and interpretation (Lewandowski, 1993), on geotectonic evolution of Poland in Palaeozoic, involving large-scale strike-slip displacement in Variscan time. Being controversial, though not finally disproved despite of several critical attempts, the hypothesis trigerred many scientific studies, using modern geological technics, and led to better understanding of geological history of Poland.
3. Proving applicabillity of the palaeomagnetic mathods for dating of clacite veins (Lewandowski, 1999, Lewandowski et al., 1999), which proved to be helpful method of dating in the absence of geochemical time recorders.
4. Partitioning of the pre-, syn- and post-Variscan deformation in the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland), including for the first documented flower-type tectonic structure of the Holy Cross Mts (Lamarche, Lewandowski, Mansy Szulczewski, 2003). This model point to importance od strike-slip component in the Variscan evolution of the present-day Holy Cross Mts, as it was originally proposed by Lewandowski 1993.
5. Original work on global paleogeography in Palaeozoic time that has been reconstructed using combined palaeoclimatic and palaeomagnetic apparent polar wander paths (APWP) for palaeocontinets of Gondwana, Laurentia, Avalonia and Baltica (Lewandowski, 2003). It has been proved that combination of APWPs of different domains enable a high precission reconstruction of Pangea paleocontinent,at the same time holding tectonophysical parameters expressed by lithospheric plate velocities within present-day limits.
6. Determinantion of the earliest Phanerozoic paleopole position for Baltica (Lewandowski and Abrahamsen, 2003), in a consequence of palaeomagnetic studies of the Lowermost Cambrian deposits on Bornholm (Denmark) and Southern Scania (Sweden), with re-evaluation of previuosly published results.
7. Original hypothesis on significant oceanic domain, which developed in the Pieniny basin at the turn of mid/late Jurassic time (Lewandowski et al., 2005). This and followed studies proved that geological formations, currently incorporated into the Pieniny Klippen Belt, were separated by distances of hundreds km from the stable continent of Eurasia in the mid/late Jurassic time. This conclusion has been independently confirmed by other palaeomagnetic, geological and geochemical studies, thus giving a way for better understanding of origin and geotectonic evolution of the Jurassic Magura basin.
8. Original, first palaeomagnetic studies on Permian and Jurassic deposits of Dinarides Velebit Mt, Croatia (Lewandowski et al., 2009, Werner et al, 2015). Integrated with geochemical and mineralogical analysis, studies performer during 2009-2013 period identified a secondary, syn-tectonic and burial related natural remanent magnetization of rocks under study has been documented that sched more light on the burial and dynamic of tectonic uplift of the Dinaric orogen in Tertiary tme
   Main international projects and cooperation.

A. Scientific projects in the domain of palaeomagnetism in the framework of the international EUROPROBE project. This activity resulted in a longlasting scientific cooperation with:
1. French geologists of the University of Lille-1 (dr Juliette Lamarche, prof. Jean-Louis Mansy) on Variscan tectonism of Ardennes and Holy Cross Mts, and the highly-cited publication in the highly ranked journals (Lamarche et al., 1999, Lewandowski eta al., 1999, Averbuch et al., 2002, Lamarche et al., 2002, Lamarche et al., 2003).
2. Danish geologist dr Niels Abrahamsen of the University of Aarhus on palaeomagnetic record in the Precambrian-Lower Palaeozoic rocks of Denmark and Southern Sweden (Abrahamsen and Lewandowski, 1995, Lewandowski and Abrahamsen, 2003)

B. Multidisciplinary project aiming at better understanding of evolution of Alpine orogen in the Central and Southern Europe, in cooperation with Komensky University (Slovakia) and University of Zagreb (Croatia). New data and interpretation on evolution of Tethys Ocean in the European domain has been presented. Palaeomagnetic studies on Dinaric orogen is currently running.

C. Main co-organizer (with Vinton Buffenmyer, ION Geophysical, USA, and dr hab. ing. Piotr Krzywiec, PGI-NRI/INGPAN, Poland) of the PolandSPAN project.
PolandSPAN is a large, regional seismic program covering all of Poland in four distinct phases. This one-of-a-kind program will provide the foundation of integrated geologic knowledge and a consistent seismic framework from which to build future studies.
Phase 1 (accomplished 2012-2013) extends from the Baltic Basin in northern Poland through the Podlasie Depression and into the Lublin Basin of eastern Poland. It is comprised of nearly 2200 km of newly acquired, high-quality data. The completion of this program has created the most comprehensive picture of Poland's subsurface to date. Current estimate of total cost for the project is 29 - 30 Million USD for Phase 1. The cost has been covered by ION Geophysical (USA), but the data are also property of the National Treaure and will be included into the National Geological Archives. It is worth to mention that that public funds or taxes were not used to pay for this project, but Poland is obviously benefiting from the knowledge acquired.

D. Coordination of the ATLAB project, funded in the framework of 7FP, Theme: Research Potential Coordination and support action (Supporting) FP7-REGPOT-2011-1. This application to the one of the most demanding 7FP program (6-7% of success), oriented toward strengthening research capacity of a beneficiary, seemed to be unprecedent success for the Institute of Geological Sciences, PAS. More than 3.5 Ma Euro was allocated to the institute, enabling purchase of the state-of-the-art research infrastructure, employement of top-level, internationally recognized scientists from abroad, and to stimulate international cooperation with top ranked research units in Europe.
